Athens is becoming more vegan-friendly

Asian tourist hot spots ranked the highest in terms of the most vegan options in the world, according to The Vegan Word.

Phuket and Chiang Mai in Thailand and Ubud on the Indonesian island of Bali made up the top 3. Three European cities, including the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, the Dutch capital of Amsterdam as well as English seaside resort Brighton ranked among the top 8.

The Vegan Word, a site run by the author of best-selling vegan travel books, Caitlin Galer-Unti conducted an analysis of vegan listings website Happycow and came up with a list of the cities with the most vegan restaurants per 100,000 inhabitants as of December 2022.

Greece might be traditionally a meat-loving nation, but as the site notes, Athens is seeing a resurgence in vegan restaurants as more vegan-friendly spots are popping up.

The number of vegans worldwide in 2023 will be approximately 88 million, which is around 1.1 percent of the world’s population. Over the past five years, the search term ‘veganism’ has increased by 580 percent on Google. In 2021, the global vegan market size was nearly 16 billion US dollars.
