The latest Greek entry on the European Union’s list of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) products is the “Kissouri” honey produced in the south of the large island of Evia, specifically in the rugged and picturesque Karystia region.
The slightly bitter, dark-colored and aromatic variety is a flower honey produced in the region by bees that forage on the purple heather plant (Erica manipuliflora or Erica verticillata). The honey comes in a liquid or crystallized form.
The PDO designation covers the entire municipality of Karystos, which encompasses the eponymous harbor town, which has been known by the same name since antiquity, along with the Marmari and Styra districts, and remote Cape Kafireas (Cavo d’Oro).
