Kudos for Saganaki, the Pan-fried Cheese Dish

Saganaki, a beloved Greek cheese appetizer enjoyed by both locals and international visitors, has ranked first in TasteAtlas' Top 100 Cheese Dishes in the World

Another online “bucket list” triumph was achieved last month by a Grecian dish, with our beloved fried saganaki taking top honors in a recent survey on a popular Internet food and travel site.

According to TasteAtlas, “…Saganaki is a highly popular Greek appetizer where various vegetables, meats, or seafood such as shrimp or mussels are wrapped in cheese, then pan-fried or seared. The cheese can also be prepared on its own, without any accompaniments. It is then pan-seared until it develops its distinctive golden crust, and served in the so-called sagani, the small, two-handled pan in which it was fried.”

As the site correctly notes, the pan-fried saganaki is usually a variety of “firm cheese”, which on Greek tables is gravierakefalogravierakasserikefalotyri or even the well-known locally-produced feta, a protected designation of origin (PDO) product made from sheep’s milk.
