It’s been a staple on dinner tables in Greece since time immemorial, and thankfully fresh bread is still among the more inexpensive food items one can purchase in the country, despite the surge in practically all prices in the conflict-ridden post-pandemic period.
According to a nationwide survey commissioned by the Greek bakers’ federation and presented by an Athens-area chamber of commerce, the price of fresh bread in Greece has been the second cheapest in the Eurozone since 2020.
According to the results of the survey, the average price of a 500-gram loaf of fresh white bread is 1.21 euros, some 48% percent lower than the average Eurozone price of 1.80 euros. Estonia has the cheapest bread prices in the Eurozone.
The fresh bread remains affordable despite a 39% increase since 2020, which is slightly above the European average.
In terms of fresh bread prices Europe-wide, Greece is in fifth place, up one notch since 2020, behind Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia and Poland.
