The Vatican has released the first image of Pope Francis since he was hospitalized for double pneumonia, showing the 88-year-old pontiff breathing unaided while attending a chapel service.

First Public Glimpse of the Pope

The photo, taken on Sunday, captures Pope Francis from behind, seated in front of the altar at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. His right hand rests on his lap, and his face is partially visible, with no sign of supplementary oxygen—a notable shift after weeks of respiratory support.

The Vatican confirmed that Francis celebrated Mass with other priests in the hospital chapel that day.

Slow Recovery, No Discharge Date Set

The pope was admitted on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection, requiring mechanical ventilation at night and extensive respiratory physiotherapy. The Vatican has repeatedly stated that he is improving, though no specific timeline has been given for his return.

Medical experts, while not directly involved in his care, caution that his age and preexisting conditions, including a history of lung infections and past pleurisy, could make recovery a long and difficult process.

Continued Leadership Despite Health Issues

Despite his condition, Francis continues to lead the Church. On Saturday, the Vatican announced his approval of a new three-year process for global Church reforms, signaling his commitment to remain in office.

The pope also marked the 12th anniversary of his election while in the hospital last Thursday, underscoring his dedication to his role even in the face of significant health challenges.
