Turkey is currently in advanced negotiations with Syria regarding the demarcation of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), according to statements from Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, as reported by the Turkish media outlet TGRT Haber.
“We will sign a maritime jurisdiction agreement with the Syrian administration. We are working on an emergency action plan that includes air, rail, road, and communication services in Syria. We will activate the airports,” Uraloglu reportedly stated on the Turkey-Syria EEZ demarcation, following the ministerial council meeting yesterday.
Additionally, an energy cooperation initiative is on the horizon. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Monday that a delegation from the Ministry of Energy is expected to visit Syria “soon” to discuss potential energy collaborations, including the transmission of electricity to address power shortages.
Turkey-Syria Energy Cooperation
“A delegation from the Ministry of Energy will visit Syria as soon as possible to examine the electrical and energy infrastructure of Syria,” Bayraktar told journalists. According to Reuters, this Turkish delegation will also discuss energy cooperation with the new Syrian government and explore ways Turkey could assist in this sector.
“The main problem in Syria right now in the energy field is the lack of electricity. We will seek a formula for Turkey to supply electricity to Syria,” Bayraktar added.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared last week that Ankara would do whatever is necessary for the reconstruction of Syria, including enhancing energy relations. Turkey already supplies electricity to certain parts of northern Syria, where it has conducted four military operations since 2016.
