ICC Issues Arrest Warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant

The statement read the warrants were linked to "crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024"

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

“The Chamber issued warrants of arrest for two individuals, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu and Mr Yoav Gallant, for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024, the day the Prosecution filed the applications for warrants of arrest,” the statement read.

The ICC statement accused Netanyahu and Gallant of committing “the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.”

The International Criminal Court rejected two Israeli appeals over its jurisdiction, stating that “the Chamber noted that the acceptance by Israel of the Court’s jurisdiction is not required, as the Court can exercise its jurisdiction on the basis of territorial jurisdiction of Palestine.”

The ICC tribunal ruled that the warrants were “classified as secret to protect witnesses and safeguard the conduct of investigations.”

The ICC said it had “found reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu, born on 21 October 1949, Prime Minister of Israel at the time of the relevant conduct, and Mr Gallant, born on 8 November 1958, Minister of Defence of Israel at the time of the alleged conduct, each bear criminal responsibility for the following crimes as co-perpetrators for committing the acts jointly with others: the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare; and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.”
