The European Union is expected to pause a series of countermeasures, including tariffs against the United States, for 90 days, following President Donald Trump’s decision to grant a grace period before imposing additional tariffs.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on social platform X (formerly Twitter):
“We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our member states, we will put them on hold for 90 days.”
Earlier, in another post on the platform, von der Leyen described Trump’s announcement as “an important step toward stabilizing the global economy,” while emphasizing that clear and predictable conditions are crucial for the proper functioning of trade and supply chains, arguing that tariffs are essentially taxes that harm businesses and consumers alike.
Von der Leyen also highlighted Europe’s continued focus on diversifying its trade partnerships, working with countries that represent 87% of global trade and share the EU’s commitment to free and open exchange of goods, services, and ideas. She stressed the importance of strengthening the EU’s internal market, saying that the current crisis has underscored its role as a cornerstone of stability and resilience.
