The Kremlin welcomed a statement by President-elect Donald Trump to Time magazine, where he opposed the use of U.S.-made long-range ATACMS missiles by Kyiv against Russian territory, following a new “massive” Russian airstrike on Ukraine last night.

Moscow stated that the latest strikes were in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of ATACMS missiles two days ago against a “military airfield” in Taganrog, southwestern Russia.

In the interview with Time magazine, Trump criticized Ukraine’s use of U.S.-supplied missiles for attacks deep into Russian territory.

As with previous statements, his comments suggest a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Ukraine under his leadership.

“This is madness. It’s madness. I strongly disagree with sending missiles for strikes hundreds of kilometers inside Russia. Why are we doing this? We’re just escalating this war and making it worse. This should never have been allowed,” Trump said during the interview, which coincided with Time naming him “Person of the Year.”

President Joe Biden last month lifted the U.S. ban on Ukraine using longer-range missiles provided by the United States for strikes deep into Russian territory. This was his final effort to bolster Kyiv in its fight to repel invading Russian forces.

The decision came after repeated appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The White House cited Russia’s deployment of 15,000 North Korean troops along the frontlines as the key reason for Biden’s change of heart.

Trump has expressed his desire to end the nearly three-year-long war swiftly during his election campaign.

In his interview with Time, he stated he has a “very good plan” to help achieve peace, but revealing it now “would almost render it useless,” refeffing to Biden’s decision to green light the use of long range missiles against Russia.

Trump, who will assume office on January 20, met last weekend with Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, where according to some reports the Ukrainian President said he would continue fighting even if the US suspended financial aid.

Donald Trump told Time that the scale of human losses in the conflict is intolerable.
