If you’re looking for the best cities to live in the world, the annual Expat City Ranking by InterNations, the largest global community for people living and working abroad, will be informative with its recent report on the best places to live worldwide.

This year, Valencia, Spain, is the winner, reclaiming its position as the top city on the list just released for 2024, while Athens has improved its position in the global ranking this year.

InterNation’s report this year is based on data from over 12,500 expats living in 53 cities across 35 countries. The report evaluates cities across five key indicators: quality of life, ease of settling in and personal finances among others.

Valencia, which was named the best city in the world for 2022, returns to the top spot on the 2024 list. Known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and affordable lifestyle, Valencia scores highly on the quality of life index, taking the first position overall.

Expats praise the city’s affordable public transportation with 96% positive responses and the opportunities for recreational activities being 95% positive. The city’s safety stands out as well, with none of the respondents expressing dissatisfaction with their personal safety.

The city of Málaga takes second place, despite facing challenges in the job sector (44th place), remains an ideal choice for retirees (43% of participants), with 99% praising its sunny weather. Alicante is found in the third position, with affordable housing and digital infrastructure standing out.

Panama City and Mexico City complete the top five, standing out for their affordability and social life. Bangkok ranks sixth, while Madrid comes in the seventh place. Abu Dhabi and Dubai round out the top 10 cities on the list, thanks to their affordable housing and strong digital infrastructure.

The performance of the Greek capital city of Athens should be noted as it climbed 2 spots from last year, with Athens now reaching the 15th position on the list.

Athens received positive scores on account of how easy it is for foreigners to adjust to the Greek life environment. Respondents praised the city’s social life, and the warm hospitality of its residents. Additionally, it stood out for its Mediterranean climate and recreational options, which contribute to a high quality of life.

However, there were also some negative comments, particularly regarding public administration and infrastructure, which remain challenges for expats.
