A violent incident against Israeli citizens took place Thursday night in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, after a soccer match between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Reports mention at least 10 people have been injured and two remain missing.
According to Reuters, local authorities confirmed that 57 people were detained after pro-Palestine demonstrators, who were prohibited from protesting near the Johan Cruyff stadium where the match took place, attempted to reach the site. Despite fans initially leaving the stadium without incident after Ajax Amsterdam’s 5-0 win, clashes broke out in the city center later that night, with social media videos capturing scenes of people fleeing and one man being beaten.

Supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv reportedly tore down Palestinian flags hanging from residential windows, which, according to Dutch media, triggered the clashes that erupted after the soccer match.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was made aware of the violent incident and ordered two rescue planes to be dispatched to the Dutch capital, according to a statement from his office. The operation, prepared by the Israeli military and coordinated with the Dutch government, will include medical and rescue personnel.
Israel’s national security ministry advised the Israeli citizens involved in the altercation to stay in their hotels for safety.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir condemned the assault, describing it as an anti-Semitic attack on football fans targeted “because of their Jewishness and Israeliness.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also requested assistance from the Dutch government to help Israeli citizens safely reach the airport, as relayed in a conversation with Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp.
