The British newspaper Express lauds the Greek island of Karpathos as the perfect choice for travelers seeking an authentic experience, urging them to avoid the most popular destinations in Greece suffering from over-tourism.
The second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, is among the newspaper’s 24 best places to visit, highlighting its unique cultural customs, including the picturesque village of Olympos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which preserves traditional clothing worn by the women and the archaic dialect still spoken by the locals.
Karpathos, known in Greek mythology as the land of the Titans, has the oldest finds of human presence, which dates back to the late Neolithic Period (4000–3000 BC).
The popular newspaper also draws attention to the Dodecanese island’s stunning natural beauty with high mountains, untouched landscapes, fragrant forests, traditional villages, and turquoise waters that can be visited even after August.
The island’s local council says the goal is to extend the tourism season by promoting all the island has to offer to those after an alternative experience, including its divergent natural beauty, exquisite gastronomic traditions, and different activities.
To advance this goal, the municipality organized the 2nd Gastronomy Festival on September 19th, aimed to showcase the island’s unexplored culinary treasures. Numerous visitors had the pleasure of tasting the rich cuisine and traditional products of this charming island in the Dodecanese.
