The iconic Navagio Beach (or Shipwreck Beach), located on the coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Islands of Greece, will remain closed after Greek authorities extended an order banning access for visitors to the area on Wednesday.
As a joint ministerial announcement clarified, visitors are banned from accessing the beach, by sea and land, and from the opening at the top of the cliff.
The latest decision comes despite the efforts of local authorities and assurances that the beach, an exposed cove that has become a global postcard, would be opening this year.
As the joint announcement said, the restriction, already in place since last year when a landslide occurred after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, will remain intact.
The decision specifies that there will be a prohibition to any movement, or approaching the area, anchoring of boats, as well as swimming from boats, anywhere within the cove and specifically in the marine area inside the imaginary line connecting the two ends (north and south) of the cove.
As for the plateau, access for visitors is prohibited, with a restriction distance limit of 10 meters from the edge of the cliff.
