Passenger traffic at Greece’s largest airport, Athens International Airport, saw a significant increase of 14.5% in Dec. 2024, further highlighting the robust performance of Greece’s tourism sector. Over the course of the entire year, passenger numbers rose by 13.1%, reaching a total of 31.85 million.
In particular, the airport recorded 2.13 million passengers in Dec. 2024, a 14.5% rise compared to the same month of 2023. Both domestic and international passenger traffic saw impressive increases, up by 6.2% and 18.1%, respectively.
For the full year, Athens Airport’s passenger traffic reached 31.85 million, reflecting a 13.1% year-on-year growth. Domestic traffic grew by 7.3%, while international traffic surged by 15.7%.
In terms of flight operations, Athens International Airport handled 268,301 flights in 2024, marking an 11% increase compared to 2023. Both domestic and international flights saw rises of 5.1% and 15.5%, respectively.
It should be noted that there was a 19.7% surge in tourism revenues in Greece in Oct. 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, reflecting the country’s successful efforts in extending the travel season.
The Bank of Greece revealed data according to which travel receipts reached 2.177 billion euros in Oct. 2024, up from 1.819 billion euros of the same month in 2023. Arrivals also increased by 8.6% during the same period.
For the ten-month period of Jan-Oct, tourism revenues totaled 20.935 billion euros, marking a 5.5% rise compared to19.84 billion euros during the same period in 2023. Non-resident traveler arrivals during this period grew by 9.2%, further demonstrating the sector’s strong performance.
Meanwhile, the manager of the country’s regional airports, Fraport Greece, reported significant growth in passenger traffic across the 14 regional airports it manages. More than 35 million passengers passed through these airports from Jan. to Nov. in 2024, representing a 6.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
