Athens International Airport (AIA) experienced another high performance of passenger traffic, with official data indicating an increase of 10.5% this August compared to the same month in 2023.
More specifically, both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded last year’s numbers by 6.8% and 12.1%, respectively.
Overall, traffic in Greece’s largest airport reached 21.26 million passengers, a rise of 13.9%, during the first eight months of 2024. During this period domestic passenger traffic rose by 7.8%, while international passenger traffic increased by 16.6%.
Flight numbers at AIA, during the first eight months of 2024 recorded an 11.8% increase compared to the same period last year, with the flights reaching 180,594.
Both domestic and international flights at the Athens International Airport saw an uptick by 5.2% and 17.0%, respectively, compared to 2023.
These figures further support the positive outlook for a record-breaking year in 2024 for the country’s major airport in both passenger traffic and flight numbers.
Tourism Heading Toward Record Year
Tourism also continues on an upward trend, suggesting that 2024 could set a new record for the sector, according to Alpha Bank’s latest Economic Developments Bulletin.
Recent data from the Bank of Greece shows that travel arrivals and revenues rose by 15.5% and 12.2%, respectively, compared to the already high levels of the first half of 2023.
Meanwhile, the capital’s air terminal recently announced a strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines to enhance connectivity with Sub-Saharan Africa. This collaboration opens Greece to a market of nearly 129 million people, with Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at AIA, lauding the African airline as a “valuable partner” during a presentation of the new alliance.
