Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport (AIA) is expected to maintain an upward trajectory in 2025 and the coming years, though growth is projected to remain in the single digits. Meanwhile, Greece’s largest airport is preparing for a significant transformation, with major infrastructure investments scheduled for completion starting in the second half of 2027.
According to airport management, 2025 has begun on a positive note despite ongoing global uncertainties. While the average growth in air traffic across Europe stands at just 1.8%, according to 2024 data, compared to 2019 levels, Athens Airport has recorded a notable 24.5% increase. However, this gap is not expected to persist.
“This level of divergence cannot continue indefinitely. We anticipate single-digit growth for 2025, and similarly modest increases over the medium term,” said AIA CEO Yiannis Paraschis, addressing shareholders at the company’s annual General Assembly.
Amid shifting geopolitical conditions and their economic impact—especially in the Western markets traditionally served by AIA—the airport is turning its gaze eastward. Expansion plans include strengthening ties with the Chinese market, not only by enhancing connections with Beijing and Shanghai, but also by exploring opportunities in other regions of China.
The airport’s current expansion program is expected to start generating revenue in the second half of 2027, with the launch of a new multi-storey car park. Additional commercial revenues—from new retail and dining areas within the expanded terminal—will begin to flow by the end of 2028.
Looking ahead, Athens International Airport aims to handle up to 40 million passengers annually by 2032, supported by a major expansion of both its Main and Satellite Terminal Buildings. The project will add approximately 148,000 square meters of operational space—a 68% increase—and include new passenger processing facilities, additional boarding gates and aircraft stands, as well as expanded retail and dining areas.
Roadway improvements and key infrastructure upgrades are also planned. Meanwhile, construction of 32 new aircraft parking stands on the northern apron and a multi-storey parking garage is on track for completion by mid-2027.
