Athens is one of this year’s best-value city breaks, according to the UK Post Office’s annual Travel Money “City Costs Barometer”.
The Greek capital ranked fifth in the “Best Value City Breaks” category, with an estimated overall cost of £289.40 (roughly 336 euros). The Lithuanian capital of Vilnius took the top spot as the most affordable, at £236.51.
Athens ranked fourth regarding accommodation, the single biggest cost for most city break travelers from the United Kingdom. As the Barometer revealed, it costs on average £140 (163 euros) per person for two nights’ three-star weekend accommodation in Athens, with Lille, France being the most affordable for holiday-makers, at £131 (152.50 euros). Athens was the second most affordable city break destination for dining, costing UK travelers an average £49.95 (58 euros) for a three-course meal for two with a bottle of house wine.
Every year, Post Office Travel Money compares the cost of short breaks in cities across Europe for UK holidaymakers – overall, and for specific items like accommodation, meals and visits to cultural attractions.
