The Greek Isle Italians Put in Top 10 ‘Small Paradises’ (video)

“The most serene and nature-loving of the Sporades islands, with kilometers of pristine and protected coastline"

Alonnisos, a Greek island in the central Aegean and part of the Sporades chain—along with Skiathos and Skopelos—is among the top 10 “small paradises” for Italian holiday-makers, according to the popular website thewom.it.

The website, specializing in sustainability and alternative forms of tourism, surveyed its users to pick Mediterranean islands with mostly untouched natural environments that do not suffer from over-tourism and over-population.

It dubs the isle as “the most serene and nature-loving of the Sporades islands, with kilometers of pristine and protected coastline.” It goes on to note that “In Alonissos, visitors can swim or enjoy unique diving experiences in areas within an impressive marine nature park that is home to rare wildlife species.”

In their efforts to further promote the island in markets such as Italy, the UK, France, Scandinavia, Germany, and other international destinations, the Municipality of Alonnisos partnered with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and other tourism-focused specialists this year once more.

According to data so far, these efforts have paid off, as travelers from these markets have responded positively, showing a heightened interest in authentic experiences, activities, and quality services in a truly exotic setting.

“In an era where mass tourism and over-tourism set the pace, Alonissos naturally differentiates itself. It is encouraging that, year by year, more travelers seek quality, nature, and authenticity in their vacations and choose Alonissos not only for relaxation but also to learn a way of life that they will take with them when they leave and make it their own,” notes Diogenis Theodorou, President of the Alonissos Tourism Committee and travel agent.
