Strategies that will maximize Greece’s yachting potential take center stage this week during the 4th Panhellenic Yachting Congress which kicks off on Thursday (February 20) at the Asteria in Glyfada on the Athenian Riviera.

The two-day event brings together industry experts, stakeholders, and policymakers to discuss issues affecting the sector including inefficient port management, outdated legislation, and the need for strategic planning.

A major focus will be on sustainability and green technologies, the role of AI in smart yachting systems, financing tools for businesses, and education in the sector.

Despite being a top global yachting destination with extensive coastlines and a thriving tourism industry, Greece still faces challenges in infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and sustainable development.

A recent study released by research institute diaNEOsis estimates that developing 30% of Greece’s planned yachting infrastructure could generate 2.9 billion euros in revenues and create over 5,000 new berths. The study further projects that, upon full implementation by 2031, annual revenues could reach 602.7 million euros while supporting more than 8,400 jobs.

However, the country currently operates only 37 out of its 168 tourism ports and many authorized marinas require significant upgrades.

Greece accounts for approximately 17% of the global charter fleet and has seen a steady annual growth of 12% in its yacht charter market, with international demand surging post-Covid. Popular destinations include the Cyclades, the Ionian and Dodecanese islands, which account for 70% of all charter bookings.

Through its panel discussions and presentations, the conference aims to foster international collaborations that will help drive Greece’s yachting industry forward.

At the same time, in view of an increasing demand for high-end marine tourism and a growing superyacht sector, the event presents an opportunity to strengthen Greece’s position as a premier yachting destination.
