The Cycladic island of Sifnos is in the spotlight for the 2024 tourist season as international travel websites like the National Geographic in the United Kingdom and Condé Nast Traveller in Spain and in the USA promote it as a “go to” island for this summer season.
However, highlighting the inherent risks of overtourism for previously little-heard of islands like Sifnos, Europa Nostra also recently added it to its list of “endangered islands”.
National Geographic ranks it 19th in its list of 31 places people should visit this summer in Greece, citing its gastronomy, whitewashed villages and sandy beaches.
Sifnos, according to National Geographic, is the home of the “father of modern Greek cuisine” Nikolaos Tselementes, who was born in 1878. And tourists are encouraged to seek out chickpea stews and a local slow-cooked braised lamb dish called “mastelo” while on the island.
Meanwhile, Condé Nast Traveller Spain and the USA have also noted the great gastronomy to be found on the island.
