This puts Greece among the most costly countries in Europe for alcoholic beverages placing it 3rd out of the 27 EU states, with prices reaching 51% above the average.
It is noted that from 1998 until today, the taxation on alcoholic beverages in Greece has increased a total of eight times, with four increases occurring within the period of 2009-2010, leading to a 125% increase in the excise tax coefficient on alcoholic beverages.
According to Eurostat – the European Union’s Statistical Authority, beer production in Greece reached 565.34 million liters in 2022, up from 400.22 million liters in 2021, marking a nearly 41% rise, a trend that continued in 2023
According to the WHO, there has been a gradual decrease in alcohol consumption both in the EU and in Europe overall. The data concerns total alcohol consumption, which refers to annual sales of pure alcohol in liters per person aged 15 and over.
