England suffered their first defeat under interim coach Lee Carsley as Vangelis Pavlidis’ 94th-minute winner earned Greece a historic 2-1 win on Thursday evening at Wembley.
The Blue-and-white side took the lead after the break, as Pavlidis twirled past three England players in the box to fire a low shot beyond keeper Jordan Pickford.
The Greek players and staff dedicated their surprise victory against England for the Nations League match at Wembley to teammate George Baldock, 31, whose body was found in his residence’s pool on Wednesday.
Baldock, who was on Panathinaikos Athens’ roster this season, earned 12 caps for Greece before his drowning on Wednesday. He qualified as an international for the Greek national team due to a grandmother born in the country.
As well as a moment of silence, both sets of players wore black armbands in tribute to the deceased defender. At least 5,000 Greece-supporting fans were in the stands at Wembley during the evening.
