In an enthralling battle in the Australian Open final, Italy’s Jannik Sinner came from two sets down on Sunday to beat Russian Daniil Medvedev at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
Sinner, 22, was trailing Medvedev by two sets (3-6, 3-6) before rallying and taking the next three sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-3), clinching his first-ever Grand Slam title.
The Italian had knocked out world No.1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-final in stunning fashion, ending the Serb’s long reign of the first Grand Slam on the calendar. Sinner is the first Italian to win the Australian Open title. For 2021 US Open champion Medvedev, the loss was his fifth in six major finals.
