Olympiacos FC owner Evangelos Marinakis was the recipient of boisterous cheering by team fans on Wednesday evening at the Opap Arena when he walked onto the field to greet players and staff set to play for the UEFA Conference League championship.
Marinakis later walked to the side of the stadium where many of Olympiacos’ 20,000 fans were seated. Two-third of the roughly 32,500 seats were visibly occupied by fans of the “Reds”.
Olympiacos faced off on Wednesday against Seria A club Fiorentina for the trophy, the first time the popular Piraeus side has appeared in a European championship final.
Marinakis was on hand for the hugely anticipated final, which comes only a month after the Olympiacos U-19 won the European championship by defeating Milan in Nyon, Switzerland.
Opap Arena was reminiscent of Olympiacos’ Karaiskakis home field on Wednesday, with much of the stands bathed in red, the main color of the Piraeus team.
