Greek football club Olympiacos FC Piraeus will face Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the Greek club’s quest for a spot in the “Round of 16” in the URFA Conference League.
The draw appears to leave the ‘Reds’ relatively content, as the Greek side avoided meeting some of the more formidable opponents, such as Eintracht Frankfurt, who were among the “8” potential adversaries.
The first leg for Carlos Carvalhal’s Piraeus team is scheduled for February 15 at home in the “Karaiskakis” stadium—three days after the government’s “closed-door” measures expire. The second leg will take place in Hungary a week later, specifically on February 22.
As for the history between the two clubs, one has to go back to September 1996 when they met in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Olympiacos considered the strong favorite at the time under the guidance of Dusan Bajevic, faced an unexpected setback with a heavy defeat in Hungary (1-3). In the return leg, they couldn’t overturn the situation, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
