Greek rowing is celebrating two medals in a single day, as both the men’s and women’s lightweight double sculls teams won the bronze medals at the Paris Olympics on Friday morning.
The two-man crew of Petros Gkaidatzis and Antonis Papakonstantinou completed their race in a time of 6.13.44 behind the Irish and Italian teams which picked up gold and silver, respectively.
A little after the men’s success, the female crew of Dimitra Kontou and Zoi Fitsiou also picked up bronze in the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls with a time of 6:49.28. Great Britain and Romania won gold and silver, respectively.
The men’s medal was the first for Greece in the event since 2008, and the fifth medal for Greek rowing in the Olympic Games overall. It is the second consecutive medal, following Stefanos Ntouskos’ gold medal in Tokyo 2020.
Fintan McCarthy and Paul O’Donovan from Ireland picked up gold while the Italian crew of Stefano Oppo/Gabriel Soares won silver ahead of the Greek team.
The two medals bring Greece’s tally at the Olympic Games to a total of 4, after Tselidis won a bronze in Judo and Christou picked up a silver in swimming.
In the medal table, China leads with 12 gold medals followed by the USA with 9, while the USA is first and France second in the aggregate tally with 38 and 27, respectively.
