The Cash Bonuses for Greek Medal Winners at Paris Olympics

So far, the Greek Olympic team is putting on an exceptional performance having already won 7 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze)

Greek athletes who manage to pick up one of the three medals at the Paris Olympic Games will be rewarded with a notable financial bonus by the Greek state. Apart from the state’s financial remuneration, the Greek medal winners also receive rewards from sponsors.

So far, the Greek Olympic team is putting on an exceptional performance having already won 7 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 5 bronze) after long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou added a gold – his second Olympic gold in a row – to the team’s tally.

This success seems to be well-recognized by the Greek state, which grants high bonuses to the Greek medal winners, as well as other privileges, in addition to rewards from sponsors.

As laid out by the General Secretariat of Sports, it will reward the medalists with the following bonuses depending on the color of the medal:

  • €90,000 for anyone who wins a gold medal (only Tentoglou has achieved this in France so far).
  • €60,000 for anyone who wins a silver medal (Apostolos Christou in the 200m backstroke).
  • €50,000 for anyone who wins a bronze medal (Theodoros Tselidis in the 90kg judo, Papakonstantinou-Gaidatzis in the lightweight double sculls, Kontou-Fitsiou in the lightweight double sculls, Lefteris Petrounias in the rings, Karalis in pole vault).

The total amount is expected to reach €400,000.

Additionally, the Hellenic Olympic Committee has approved an amount of €200,000, which will be distributed to the sports federations that brought medals to the country, for them to manage as they see fit.
