Greek basketball rose slightly in the world rankings, as the Greek men’s national basketball team, while still being outside the top 10 teams in the world, managed to gain one spot, according to the latest FIBA rankings released today, August 15.

Greece moved up one spot from 14th, according to FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, an association of national organizations that governs the sport of basketball worldwide.

As expected the top spot was held by the United States national team who won the gold medal in the Paris Olympics without losing a single match throughout the tournament, followed by Serbia, which climbed two positions to secure the second spot.

The Serbs lost in picked up silver in the Olympics. Germany is third, while France, which rose five places, is in fourth. Canada completes the top five, having moved up two spots.

In terms of zone rankings, Greek basketball was 8th in Europe, while Serbia held the top spot.

The Greek men’s basketball team was knocked out of the Paris Olympic tournament when it lost to Germany in the quarter-finals. Germany went on to lose the game for bronze against Serbia.
