A Greek athlete tested positive for banned substances days before the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics, to kick off in Paris on July 26, To Vima reported on Tuesday.
According to sources of the Hellenic Anti Doping Organization (HADA) cited by local media in the country, the track athlete tested positive during a random doping check – in line with the protocol now followed by most anti-doping sports authorities around the world.
According to reports, results purportedly showed that the athlete had used a performance-enhancing substance.
HADA reminded, however, that regulations allow an athlete flagged for a banned substance to request a repeat test of the same sample.
The name of the said athlete was not revealed.
Based on HADA regulations, in line with World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, the Greek athlete will be removed from the country’s Paris 2024 Olympic delegation.
The national doping agency informed the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), the Hellenic Olympic Committee and WADA of the incident.
The XXXIII Olympiad will be held in Paris from July 26 to Aug. 11 with the participation of some 10,714 athletes from over 200 countries.
