The Greek artistic swimming team won its first ever gold medal at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade on Friday.
The athletes wowed the judges at the Team Free event with their “Warrior” routine, who gave them a score of 270.1980, surpassing runner-up Italy’s performance by 15.5 points, and earingd them, not only first place, but also their first medal in this category.
The result came as an exceptional comeback after high deductions in the preliminaries led the team to make adjustments to its choreography as well as its roster for the final act.
This historic win was accompanied by two more silver medals in the competition. They were runner-ups to Spain in the Team Technical event and came in second, for a mere 0.9066 points, behind Germany in the Acrobatics Routine finals.
Greece’s performance in the championships placed it fifth overall, behind Great Britain, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain, which dominated the competition with a total of four gold medals.
Belgrade sees the athletes off, as they get ready to compete for a spot on the podium at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
