Following Friday’s first-ever “floating” Olympic Games opening ceremony – which received mixed reviews – Day 1 of competition at the Paris Olympics kicked off on Saturday with 13 medals up for grabs.
A number of Greek athletes are set to compete on day 1, the first of which is champion rower Stefanos Ntouskos who competed in the men’s single scull preliminaries and came in second, behind New Zealand’s Tom Mackintosh, thereby qualifying for the quarterfinals. Ntouskos won gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), setting a new Olympic record in the process.
Following suit are the preliminaries in swimming, artistic gymnastics, shooting and tennis. The day will conclude with the women’s water polo and men’s basketball events.
Notable athletes participating today include swimmer Anna Ntountounaki, shooting champion Anna Korakaki, Greece’s “Lord of the Rings” Lefteris Petrounias, and tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas.
