Taekwondo made its debut at the Paris Games and Christina Gentzou, a 19-year-old athlete, made history by winning Greece’s first-ever medal in Paralympic Taekwondo, marking a significant milestone for the Greek team at the Paris Games, putting Greece on the medal tally.
Gentzou played strategically, capitalizing on counterattacks to accumulate points, eventually taking a commanding 12-2 lead just a minute before the end of the match.
Despite attempts by her Chinese opponent to rally, the match concluded with a 14-4 victory for the Greek athlete.
The Greek athlete secured a spot for competing for the bronze medal in the 65 kg category (K44) of Taekwondo after showcasing an exceptional performance in the repechage round against the third seed, Secil Er from Turkey.
Gentzou scored 23 points with a smart and tactical approach, securing a decisive 23-2 victory.
Christina Gentzou became the first Greek athlete to win a medal in the sport. Notably, this also marked the Greek delegation’s first medal, achieved just on the second day of the Games.
