The 42nd edition of the iconic Spartathlon is set to kick off on Saturday, September 28, beneath the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis in Athens. This prestigious ultra-marathon will see 400 elite athletes from 55 countries compete, including some of the biggest names in the world of endurance racing. Among the participants is last year’s winner, Greek champion Fotis Zisimopoulos, and World Champion and record-holder American runner Camille Heron.

Organized by the International Spartathlon Association, this historic race has been running smoothly for over four decades.

The Spartathlon is renowned for its grueling 246-kilometer course, tracing the footsteps of the ancient messenger Pheidippides, who in 490 BC ran from Athens to Sparta to seek help from the Spartans in their battle against the Persians. In keeping with history, the race will conclude at the statue of King Leonidas in the historic city of Sparta.

The 42nd Spartathlon is held under the auspices of the Greek Ministries of National Defense and Tourism, with direct supervision from the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). The race continues to be a true test of human endurance and spirit, honoring a legacy over 2,500 years old.

This year’s event will also feature 50 Greek athletes, who will push their limits on this demanding journey from Athens to Sparta.

As always, the safety of the athletes is paramount. Modern technology, including live GPS tracking, will be used to monitor the progress of all participants along the course, ensuring swift intervention if any issues arise.

President of the International Spartathlon Association Vangelis Polymeris welcomed all the participating athletes and emphasized the organization’s commitment to improving the race and ensuring that its legacy remains strong. “We never stop striving to maintain the race’s sustainability and future,” he mentioned.
