A significant yacht fire erupted at Zea Marina in Piraeus late Thursday night, engulfing two yachts in flames. The blaze, which started around 11 pm, caused extensive damage and led to the destruction and sinking of two vessels.
In a rapid mobilization from the fire department, 15 firefighters with five fire vehicles rushed to the scene. A fireboat was also dispatched to assist in containing the fire.
Fortunately, there were no people on board the boats, and authorities successfully evacuated 10 trapped individuals from the pier.
Due to the intense smoke, one police officer and a firefighter were taken to the hospital with respiratory issues.
The fire has since been largely extinguished and cleanup efforts are expected to commence shortly. Two yachts have sunk, while a third has suffered extensive damage. Firefighters remain at the scene to deal with any possible rekindling.
The cause of the yacht fire remains unknown. The Fire Department’s investigative unit and the Coast Guard will conduct a thorough examination to determine the origins of the blaze.
