Worker Fatally Stabs Construction Contractor in Kalamata

The alleged perpetrator, a 35-year-old Turkish national described as 'unstable', will face a prosecutor on Monday; 52-year-old victim repeatedly stabbed at worksite

A 35-year-old Turkish national remained in custody on Friday for the fatal stabbing of his 52-year-old employer, a construction contractor, a day earlier in the extreme southern Greece coastal city of Kalamata, with reports claiming the alleged perpetrator as displaying erratic behavior and that no financial differences are involved.

The victim was repeatedly stabbed to death at a worksite, and specially at a seaside hotel under renovation.

Media reports cite eyewitnesses accounts by other workers of a fracas and shouting at the site, with the suspect seen fleeing on foot and the victim lying in a pool of his own blood. The latter was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his wounds.

Police later arrested the man nearby after being summoned by other workers. He was in possession of a knife when arrested, reports state.

According to other press reports, the Turkish man faced a deportation order.

On Friday, state broadcaster ERT reported from the city that when asked why he committed the homicide the foreign national merely said “because it was necessary”. He also claimed he was being trailed by “Turkish agents”.

After being assigned a defense attorney he requested and received a 48-hour continuance to face a local prosecutor on Monday as a suspect in a homicide.
