NY Woman Tears Greek Flags – Following the terrorist attack Hamas launched against Israel on October 7 last year and the subsequent tough Israeli military retaliation, which expanded into Lebanon and Syria, the degree of polarization in society across the globe has skyrocketed.
But sometimes the passionate expression of support for either side in the conflict by ordinary people who possess little to no knowledge about the region, even on basic facts like, for example, the flags of the combatants, results in embarrassing mistakes.
Such was the case with a vocal female pro-Palestine supporter from New York, who went on a rage, stripping down and tearing up what she thought were Israeli flags adorning a New Jersey restaurant.
To her chagrin, the irate woman, who can be heard berating the employees of the restaurant, accusing them of supporting genocide, was eventually informed by the stunned workers that the flags she was furiously tearing up were actually Greek.
The humiliated woman can be heard apologizing for her mistake, saying she thought the flags were Israeli. The video understandably went viral on social platform X (formerly Twitter), with thousands of retweets and impressions.
The incident, yet comedic, albeit related to a deadly serious and tragic war, can give us pause for some reflection. Supporting various causes is a healthy and normal reaction by ordinary people, especially when it concerns the death of innocent people in a war. However, maybe rudimentary knowledge of the cause one is so vociferously backing should precede and inform one’s actions.
