Most shops will remain closed in Greece on Monday, which marks Clean Monday (Shrove Monday), apart from fish markets, bakeries and fruit and vegetable markets, which traditionally remain in operation during the specific religious and national holiday.
Certain supermarket chains will also open on Monday, but will operate on a curtailed schedule.
The main Varvakeios Agora, the central market in downtown Athens, will also operate normally. It will be open until 5 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 p.m. on the same day until 3 p.m. on Clean Monday.
Clean Monday marks the commencement of Great Lent on the Eastern Orthodox religious calendar, and the long weekend offers a much-needed boost to local economies, as many municipalities across the country hold carnival festivities with the hope of attracting domestic travelers.
