Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) says that the weather in Greece will continue to be severe in many regions of the country for Friday, and through the weekend, with a high risk of storms, hail, and a high number of lightning strikes.
The three-day bout of bad weather began on Thursday with 20,000 lightning strikes and strong thunderstorms.
According to the updated EMY bulletin, cold and unstable air masses in the upper atmosphere will remain over Greece until Saturday (31-08-24), affecting most of the mainland with heavy rain and thunderstorms, which will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning and localized hailstorms. These phenomena will temporarily be accompanied by very strong winds (sudden storms).
On Friday, storms are forecast from midday until evening in central Macedonia (mainly in Halkidiki), eastern Macedonia, the Peloponnese, Central Greece (mainly in the central and eastern parts, including Attica), Epirus, Thessaly, Euboea, and possibly the Sporades.
Attica will be partly cloudy that will gradually turn into rain and scattered thunderstorms from midday until evening, which may be strong in some areas. Winds will blow from the north at 3 to 4 Beaufort and the temperature from 22 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Thessaloniki will also start partly cloudy, becoming temporarily overcast with local rain and scattered thunderstorms mainly during midday and afternoon hours, locally strong. Winds will be variable, 3-4 Beaufort with temperatures between 21 to 29 degrees Celsius.
