Water in Stamata North of Athens Temporarily Non-potable

According to the Municipality of Dionysos, the water is not suitable for use by the residents of Stamata due to hyperchlorination.

The water in Stamata north of Athens is not suitable for use, due to over-chlorination in the water supply tank, according to a statement by the Municipality of Dionysos.

The Municipality near Marathon notes: “The over-chlorination was detected as part of regular water quality checks and the remediation process has already been initiated. Citizens are requested not to use the water for consumption, cooking or other domestic uses. The relevant departments of the Municipality are working intensively to address the problem. We also request that they purchase bottled water for their needs. We ask for everyone’s understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the issue.”

The orders apply only to the water in Stamata, not the surrounding areas.

The announcement comes as water scarcity has ballooned into a concerning issue in Greece, particularly as decreased rain and snowfall, prolonged heatwaves during the summer and increased water usage has led several islands to declare a state of emergency and authorities to be concerned over water shortages in Athens.
