The Greek state on Thursday launched a new application – offered through the highly successful gov.gr online platform – to validate insurance coverage for vehicles in the country, part of an effort to tackle the scourge of uninsured vehicles.
The Gov.gr “digital wallet” service will streamline the way vehicle owners manage their data, allowing the sharing of information between state entities and the private sector – ie insurance providers – through explicit consent.
This app facilitates transactions, enabling quick and easy data retrieval and sharing, allowing vehicle owners to complete tasks via their mobile phones or computers without handling physical or digital documents.
For vehicle insurance, the Gov.gr Wallet accelerates the process for insurers by allowing them to securely access the required information from public registries. Just as importantly, vehicle owners maintain control over their data, giving consent at each step for its retrieval and sharing with their chosen insurance company.
More specifically, the process will be as follows:
1. Initial Contact: The citizen contacts the insurance company to enter into a vehicle insurance contract.
2. Basic Information: The insurance company records the citizen’s request to use the new digital service via Gov.gr Wallet and asks for basic details, including the citizen’s tax identification number, full name, and the vehicle’s registration number.
3. Notification: The citizen receives a push notification from the Gov.gr Wallet, informing them that the specific company is requesting necessary information for the specified purpose, such as vehicle registration, driving license, and owner details.
4. Consent and Verification: If the citizen wishes to proceed, they will first give their consent for the “retrieval and display” of the data to be transferred and then verify its accuracy.
5. Final Consent: The citizen decides whether or not to consent to the transfer of this information to the insurance company’s information system.
Alternatively, citizens can provide their consent through an application developed for this purpose on Gov.gr, in addition to the Gov.gr Wallet.
In a later stage, the service will expand to include other transactions between citizens and public or private entities, such as car rentals, contracts with energy and telecommunications providers, and nursery registrations.
The ministry of digital governance, in collaboration with the ministry of transport and the ministry of finance, launched the application.
