“This is one of the most exciting things that I’ve been able to participate in – a partnership between the US embassy, Olympiacos, Piraeus and the Library of Piraeus,” US Ambassador to Greece George J. Tsunis said on Friday, during the inauguration of the Pop-Up American Space @Karaiskaki, a continuation of the successful American Corner of Piraeus.
The space was established at the Piraeus Municipal Library’s annex within the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium and was unveiled on Friday by Tsunis, the President of Olympiacos FC, Evangelos Marinakis, and Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis.
“We are able to do sports diplomacy, provide educational opportunities and build bridges between the United States and Greece. Here, people who come to the football games, people from the community of Piraeus can come here; they can learn about the United States, they can learn about educational opportunities, we do in all the facilities that we created in this partnership provide coding opportunities, stem opportunities,” the top American diplomat in Greece told in.gr, before adding:
“So, the building of the bridges not only in sports, which brings people together, but they’re also in educational opportunities. This is the work that responsible individuals should be doing, because it helps people become the best versions of themselves, to climb the ladder s of success. It’s about education; it’s about opportunity; it’s about hope. And you know, I think the best lessons in life come from being teammates with someone on a football field and learning how to rely on each other. So, I am incredibly excited to be here today.”
The Pop-Up American Space @Karaiskaki is described by the US embassy as a “hangout spot” that creatively combines entertainment with knowledge and the values of sports in Greece and the United States, just before the match starts and beyond.
The new space offers opportunities to explore the world of virtual reality, or to immerse oneself in the tracks of a video game, play virtually with your favorite team, or simply to charge your phone.
The emphasis is also on information about studies in the United States, scholarships and educational exchange programs, along with travel destinations and tourism ideas, and opportunities for short-term work.
The space will also be available for educational initiatives in cooperation with schools and youth groups, as well as hosting interactive workshops and games for children.
It’s also worth noting that all activities at the American Space @Karaiskaki are free of charge.
The Pop-Up American Space @Karaiskaki is a collaboration between the Municipality of Piraeus and Olympiacos FC, with the participation of the American Corner of Piraeus and the support of the US Embassy in Greece.
