A devastating accident on the A2 motorway, also known as Egnatia Odos claimed the lives of two people and injured five others on Holy Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred when a passenger car collided with a truck, causing a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle in flames.
Victims Burned Beyond Recognition
Authorities confirmed that the two occupants of the car were burned beyond recognition. DNA testing will be required to identify the victims, believed to be a couple between the ages of 65 and 75 who had returned to Greece from Switzerland to spend the Orthodox Holy Week in their native villages near the municipality of Servia. Their remains were transferred to the Mamatsio Prefecture General Hospital in Kozani.

Survivors Out of Danger
Five individuals were injured in the accident but are currently in stable condition. Among them is a toll booth employee who narrowly escaped death. She suffered a head injury and was transported to the hospital by her father. Two men were also treated in Kozani—one with a leg injury and another with chest trauma. Meanwhile, a couple is recovering in the surgical ward of the hospital in Veria.
Sequence of Events: What Caused the Crash?
According to early reports from the Hellenic Police, the Ukrainian driver of the truck may have failed to see two cars ahead due to dense fog in the area. As he approached the toll lane reserved for electronic pass (e-pass) users, he lost control and crashed into the vehicles and the toll booth’s barrier.
The collision triggered a fire in the middle vehicle, trapping its two occupants. Firefighters responded quickly but were only able to retrieve their charred bodies. The drivers of the first car and the truck managed to escape before the fire spread to their vehicles.

Ongoing Investigation and CCTV Footage Search
Traffic police from the motorway unit have launched a full investigation to determine the exact sequence of the collision. Authorities are working to establish whether the two cars initially collided before the truck struck the second vehicle, or if the truck directly caused the chain reaction.
As the toll station’s cameras were destroyed in the blaze, investigators will request footage from the managing company’s central system to assist in the reconstruction of events.
