Two Turks were arrested (both of Kurdish origin) in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki for illegal firearm possession. Both were referred to the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki under the fast-track procedure.
The suspects, aged 32 and 25, hold temporary identification documents as asylum seekers. Upon their arrest, a Canik pistol and a magazine containing 15 9mm bullets were found in the possession of the younger man.
Police officers spotted the two men, along with a third unidentified individual, walking on the sidewalk of Vas. Georgiou Street in central Thessaloniki yesterday afternoon. When the officers approached, the three attempted to flee, taking refuge in a beauty salon. The 32-year-old and the 25-year-old were apprehended, while the third individual remains at large.
During a body search, authorities discovered a Glock pistol with one bullet in the chamber and two magazines holding a total of 20 9mm rounds on the older suspect. The younger man was found with the Canik pistol and magazine.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly claimed they carried the weapons for self-defense.
A case file was drawn up by the Thessaloniki Homicide Unit, and the suspects were brought before a prosecutor, who referred them to the court. The trial was postponed, and while their detention was lifted by the court, they remain under custody.
