The truck driver who appears to have left a pedestrian dead in a hit-and-run earlier on Tuesday in the eastern Attica suburb of Pallini has been arrested, authorities said.
The 36-year-old suspect reportedly hit a 76-year-old woman who was attempting to cross Marathonos Ave at around 1pm on Tuesday leaving the victim dead on the road.
Witnesses from the surrounding shops called the police. An ambulance arrived to the scene but the woman had already died.
Hours later the police said they had arrested the driver, who claimed that he was unaware of having hit someone with his vehicle.
An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the fatal accident.
In a similar accident later on Tuesday, an elderly woman was seriously injured after a motorcycle rammed into her on Vas. Sofias Ave in central Athens. Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene. The woman was transferred to the hospital with serious injuries.
Last month the Greek government announced the rollout of an ambitious nationwide smart traffic camera system as part of efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic violations.
