Cluster of Sudden Wildfires in SW Greece Triggers Arson Probe

At least nine wildfires, of which three were major blazes, were reported in Ilia prefecture of the Peloponnese, in southwest Greece, on Friday, marking another post-summer instance of rural fires after a devastating conflagration this past week near Xylokastro – also in the same province.

A portion of the same prefecture was devastated by a multi-front wildfire in 2007, but in the summer.

The first blaze was reported at the Geraki site, near the inland town of Amaliada, with new fires erupting almost simultaneously at the Panopoulos site, a forested area, and further north near the farm town of Nea Manolada.

A significant fire-fighting force was operating at the scenes, namely, 188 fire-fighters and four ground units employing 62 vehicles. No less than 17 air-dropping aircraft had also participated in efforts before dusk. Additionally, one fire-fighter was injured.

Gusty winds hampered efforts in the early afternoon.

By nightfall, authorities reported that the wildfires were either extinguished or under control.

The most rapidly advancing front headed for the village of Kryoneri, with area residents notified by SMS to evacuate.

At least two residences were reported as burned.

The sudden and simultaneous outbreak of the wildfires resulted in an investigation by the fire brigade’s arson unit.
