Traffic regulations are fully in effect around the Metropolitan Cathedral in downtown Athens in preparation for the funeral service of former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, which will take place at 12 noon on Thursday, January 9.

Until 4:00 PM, vehicles are prohibited from parking and stopping along the entire length and side streets of Mitropoleos Street, on Aiolou Street (between Andrianou and Ermou Streets), and on Ermou Street (between Aiolou and Athinas Streets).

Additional measures are in place at the First Cemetery of Athens, where Kostas Simitis will be buried, as well as on other street in downtown Athens along the path of the funeral procession (Amalias Avenue, Stadiou Street, Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue, Kallirrois Avenue, Ilioupoleos Street, among others).

Where Parking is Prohibited

Parking and stopping of vehicles, as well as temporary and gradual traffic interruptions, will be in effect from 6:00 AM on Thursday, January 9, 2025, until the conclusion of the events:

  • Anapafseos Street, along its entire length and side streets up to the first parallel road.
  • Trivonianou Street, between Karea and M. Mousourou Streets.
  • V. Georgiou A’ Street, along its entire length.

Roads Where Traffic Will Be Interrupted

Gradual and temporary traffic interruptions will take place from 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 9, 2025, until the conclusion of the events:

  • Amalias Avenue, along its entire length and side streets up to the first parallel road.
  • Stadiou Street, between Amerikis Street and Syntagma Square.
  • Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, between Sekeris Street and Syntagma Square.
  • Syngrou Avenue, between Am. Frantzi Street and Amalias Avenue (towards Syntagma Square).
  • Ilioupoleos Street, between Ymittou and Ardittou Streets.
  • Ardittou Street, along its entire length and side streets up to the first parallel road.
  • Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue, between Eratosthenous and Ardittou Streets (towards Ardittou).
  • Kallirrois Avenue, between Am. Frantzi Street and Vouliagmenis Avenue (towards Ardittou).

The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) appeals to drivers to avoid these streets during the specified period to minimize additional traffic issues and to follow the signs and instructions of traffic controllers.
