With Holy Trinity Day (Pentecost) coming on Monday, June 24, authorities in Greece will implement specific traffic measures to boost road safety and the prevention of accidents. The road safety measures will take effect from Friday (21/6) to Monday (24/6) as the three-day weekend traditionally generates a large exodus from urban areas.
The current road safety plan is as follows:
- An increased police presence at the entrances and exits of major urban centers where heavy vehicle traffic is usually experienced.
- An increased police presence in areas with mass transportation departures (airports, ports, train stations, etc.), including specific roadway points where traffic accidents frequently occur.
- Deployment of measures and special actions within cities and at points where, due to festive events, there is higher road congestion.
- Formation of units for general and special traffic checks (particularly for confirming dangerous violations such as excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a protective helmet or seatbelt, illegal overtaking, and crossing double dividing lines, etc.).
- Around-the-clock cooperation with all relevant bodies and services for the immediate resolution of any issues that arise
- Whenever it is deemed necessary, broadly inform the public about the existence of any traffic and other issues.
Along with an increase in police personnel, the deployment of resources such as patrol cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles is expected to maintain effective policing on national roadways.
Greek Police have also issued a reminder of road guidelines for drivers:
- Be informed about the weather and the state of the road network
- Be particularly careful while driving
- Strictly follow the provisions of the Highway Code
- Drive at low speeds to better control your vehicle
- Comply with the instructions of the traffic officers.
A ban on trucks weighing more than 3.5 tons has also been implemented for the long weekend. For the outbound direction, the ban will be enforced between 4 pm and 10 pm on Friday (21/6) and between 8 am and 1 pm on Saturday (22/7). The same ban will be enforced on Monday (24/6) between 4 pm and 11 pm for the inbound direction.
