Athenians are leaving the city in hordes for the long weekend, resulting in significant traffic on the city’s roads. As a result, authorities have called for additional traffic regulations to control the traffic volume and ensure safety.
Specifically, Traffic police will be stationed at city entrances and exits, high-traffic areas, and major transit points like airports, ports, and stations. Moreover, police patrols will monitor road conditions, focusing on sections with historically high traffic and accident rates. Officers will manually direct traffic at key intersections to prevent bottlenecks and reduce congestion. Specialized teams will also conduct inspections to address dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, and unsafe overtaking. They will also monitor the use of mobile devices by drivers, which statistics indicate contributes to serious accidents.
Moreover, to further alleviate congestion, large trucks over 3.5 tons will face driving restrictions on national highways during the following hours.
- On Friday, October 25, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., heavy trucks will be prohibited from exiting major urban areas.
- On Monday, October 28, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., restrictions will apply for trucks entering major cities.
