Traffic disruptions are currently underway in central Athens due to gatherings organized by Greece’s two largest union federations, GSEE and ADEDY on a nationwide 24-hour general strike taking place on Wednesday, April 9.
According to the Traffic Police, traffic has been halted in downtown Athens on Stadiou, Panepistimiou, and Aiolou streets. These closures will remain in effect until the conclusion of the ongoing strike demonstrations, which began at 10:00 am today.
Metro stations at Syntagma and Panepistimio are also closed, and by order of the Police, trains will pass through these stations without stopping.
Significant delays have been reported across the Attica region since early morning, as the country observes the general strike and public transportation services are operating at reduced capacity, which led to many people relying on their private vehicles to move around the city.
Traffic is moving at a crawl on Kifisos and Kifisia avenues, as well as in central Athens. The situation is also heavy on Mesogion, Alexandras, Katechaki in Kareas, Patission, and the roads leading to the port of Piraeus.
Meanwhile, significant congestion is being reported on Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue and Vasilissis Sofias Street in the city center. Delays are also being experienced on the Athens-Corinth and Athens-Lamia highways.
Traffic is particularly heavy from Lykovrisi to Aigaleo, and on the Lamia-bound route, congestion begins at Petrou Ralli and stretches to Nea Filadelfeia.
On the Attiki Odos, delays are reported on the route toward Elefsina, with 5-10 minute delays at the exit for Lamia, 5-10 minutes from Plakentias to Kifisia, and 15-20 minutes from Agia Paraskevi to Kifisia along the Ymittos Peripheral Road.
There are also delays on the route toward the Airport, with 10-15 minute delays from Metamorfosi to Kifisia and 10-15 minutes at the exit for Lamia.
