Traffic restrictions will be in place on Friday, Dec. 6 ahead of the 16th anniversary events and rallies commemorating the killing of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the Greek police.
According to the latest announcements the following metro stations in Athens will be closed:
–Panepemistiou station (Red Line 3) will be closed from 9am until further notice,
–Monastiraki station will be closed from 11am to 3pm and from 5pm to until further notice.
The unarmed 15-year-old was shot dead on Dec. 6, 2008 in the central Athens district of Exarcheia, triggering some of the most violent rioting and protests in modern Greek history. Demonstrations spread to other cities in Greece and lasted for weeks.
The night Grigoropoulos died, hundreds of protestors clashed with police after taking to the streets and damaging property.
The police officer, Epaminondas Korkoneas, who shot the boy was sentenced to life in prison but released following a 2019 Appeals Court decision.
Every year, demonstrators march in memory of the young boy who was shot down by police.
Roads will be closed off in Athens starting in the afternoon into the evening.
Several marches have been announced.
Greek traffic police said measures will be in place to facilitate traffic in the center of Athens. Drivers are advised to avoid entering or parking in the city center.
